Kostroma SDPP

Overall performance of JSC "Kostroma SDPP"

The history of the open joint-stock company Kostroma SDPP is counted since the date of starting-up of the first power generating unit of 300 MW: the 11th of June, 1969. Just on that day, at 9 hours 47 minutes, the pilot flame in the first boiler was lit, and on the 29th June, the same year, at 5 hours 57 minutes, unit No.1 was connected to the mains. The Kostroma SDPP was born under a fortunate start.

The choice of the site for construction of the Kostroma SDPP in the very center of the European territory of Russia in the 60s was conditioned by three main factors: the shortage of power resources in the neighboring economic regions, ample water resources, and accessible transportation routes.

The best specialists of the Russia’s power generation sector were involved in construction of the plant. High-tempo work, precision computation, and thorough work made it possible to commission the first power generating unit with the capacity of 300 MW within the shortest time.

The electric power plant was built in three phases: commissioning of the 1st stage consisting of four double-units with the capacity of 300 MW continued from June 1969 until December 1970.

From November 1971 to June 1973 four single units with the capacity of 300 MW were put into operation (the second stage).

In 1980 the 3rd stage consisting of a unique power generating unit with the capacity of 1200 MW was commissioned.

At the time of setting-up of the plant the region was short of energy, but in one year the generating capacity equal to the Dnepr hydroelectric power station emerged there. In January 1970 the plant accomplished generation of the first billion kW/h of electric power. The SDPP started to supply electric power to chemists of Yaroslavl, textile people of Ivanovo, builders of the Moscow underground railway, car makers of Gorky, and metal-makers of Vologda. Nowadays, the energy of the JSC Kostroma SDPP is supplied to 40 regions of Russia and near-abroad countries.

On 3 October, 2003, at 0 hours 17 minutes, the Kostroma SDPP generated its 500 billionth kW/h of electric power! It reached this value as one of the first among the federal heat power plants.

It was as early back as in the course of the construction period, when a team of like-minded fellows formed there. The specialists creatively approached the standard project design on the basis of the best experience of other power plants’ personnel, latest engineering solutions of design and adjustment organizations and research institutions. The devout aim was to build up the best power plant in the country, which was going to be the most reliable, most economic, most easy-to-operate, and the most beautiful.

The present-day culture of maintenance and repair, comprehensive professional training of its staff make it possible that the Kostroma SDPP reached the lowest indices of fuel use per kW/h, high reliability of equipment performance, and to be become an advanced company of its industry not only in Russia but also worldwide.

Today, the Kostroma SDPP is one of the largest and energy-efficient heat power plants of Russia, which is soundly a flagship of the domestic energy industry.
